Stay Away From These Hidden Toxins

5 Hidden Toxins to Avoid this FALL

We hear a whole lot about toxins, and it can be overwhelming and honestly a bit scary to read about what's in our homes. The point of this write up is not to scare you, friend, it's to empower you! When we learn about why we would desire to ditch these toxins, we can begin to move in the direction of swapping them out for healthier alternatives.

1). Fragrance

Let's be honest, this doesn’t sound scary, because it's something we have all heard of, but “fragrance” is considered a trade secret which means that companies don’t have to disclose what ingredients are inside. The ingredients often include a lot of chemicals that can cause allergies, asthma, chronic breathing problems, hormone disruption and lead to bigger health problems reproductive issues and infertility.

2). Formaldehyde

Yes, the stuff we used in high school biology to preserve dead animals. It's in baby shampoo, body wash, cosmetics, hygiene products, and is a known carcinogen that is also linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity.

3). Phthalates

Phthalates group of chemicals used to soften and increase the flexibility of plastics in cosmetics. This helps products stick to our skin. They're in fragranced lotions, body washes, nail polish and colored cosmetics.

Phthalates can be extremely dangerous to children, but it’s best to avoid them all together as they can be serious endocrine disruptors and even cause birth defects. Congress has actually banned several types of phthalates already from children’s products.

4). Parabens

Parabens are a whole family of chemicals (methylparabens, propylparabens, butylparabens, and ethylparabens) that help preserve the shelf-life of products. Walk down an aisle of Target and read the labels - they're in nearly every product from face wash, night cream, makeup, masks, body wash and shampoo—they're everywhere. Parabens can mimic estrogen in the body disrupting our delicate hormonal balance. They’ve been linked to breast cancer, and since they act as a hormone disruptor they can lead to reproductive and fertility issues.

5). Sodium Lauryl Sulfate + Sodium Laureth Sulfate

The ingredient that makes soaps, body washes, bubble baths and toothpastes foam! These toxic, bubbling ingredients have been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation, and endocrine disruption.
